Tonnes of toxic waste collected from British municipal dumps is being sent illegally to Africa in flagrant breach of this country’s obligation to ensure its rapidly growing mountain of defunct televisions, computers and gadgets are disposed of safely.
Hundreds of thousands of discarded items, which under British law must be dismantled or recycled by specialist contractors, are being packaged into cargo containers and shipped to countries such as Nigeria and Ghana, where they are stripped of their raw metals by young men and children working on poisoned waste dumps.
In a joint investigation by The Independent, Sky News, and Greenpeace, a television that had been broken beyond repair was tracked to an electronics market in Lagos, Nigeria, after being left at a civic amenity site in Basingstoke run by Hampshire Country Council. Under environmental protection laws It was classified as hazardous waste and should never have left the UK.

The television, fitted with a satellite tracking device, was bought by a London-based dealer, one of dozens of operators buying up a significant proportion of the estimated 940,000 tonnes of domestic electronic waste, or e-waste, produced in the UK each year and sending it for export.
Investigators bought back the television after a 4,500-mile journey from Tilbury Docks in Essex to the giant Alaba electronics market in Lagos, where up to 15 shipping containers of discarded electronics from Europe and Asia arrive every day. At least a third of the contents of each container is broken beyond use and transferred to dumps where waste pickers scavenge amid a cocktail of burning heavy metals and dioxins. The television is just one example of a broader problem with the enforcement of the legislation, which permits the export of functioning equipment but prohibits broken electronic goods from being sent outside the EU to a country with a developing economy.
Such is the confused state of the recycling industry, with some local authorities collating figures on the amount of waste being exported and others simply handing the task to sub-contractors, that the e-waste body representing the electronics industry admits abuse is widespread.
Claire Snow, the director of the Industry Council for Equipment Recycling (ICER), told The Independent: “It is clear that the system for collecting equipment which UK householders have thrown away is not working as well as it should.
“On the pretext of re-use, equipment which is clearly not suitable for any type of re-use is effectively being dumped in developing countries.”
Government figures show that 450,000 tonnes of e-waste is currently being treated in accordance with Britain’s waste electronic and electrical equipment laws, which place a responsibility on manufacturers to meet the environmental cost. But with the average Briton throwing away four pieces of e-waste every year, approximately 500,000 tonnes is going unaccounted for. Industry research seen by The Independent estimates that at least 10,000 tonnes of waste televisions and 23,000 tonnes of computers classified as hazardous waste are being illegally exported as part of a wider e-waste market worth “tens of millions of pounds”.
Campaigners say dealers offering around £3 for a television and £1 for a computer monitor to waste sites are undercutting specialist recycling companies, creating a “grey market”.
Britain is responsible for around 15 per cent of the EU’s total e-waste, which is growing three times faster than any other muncipal waste stream.
Martin Hojsik, toxics campaigner for Greenpeace International, said: "Companies can stop this illegal toxic trade now by ensuring their goods are free from hazardous components. It is critical they and governments take full responsibility for the safe recycling of their products and put an end to the growing e-waste dumps that are poisoning people."
Bosses at Hampshire County Council last night launched an inquiry into its waste sites but insisted it and its household waste site contractor, Hopkins Recycling, only used dealers who exported functional equipment.
A spokesman for Consumers International, which is campaigning for tightened e-waste controls, said: “The sight of children scavenging toxic wastelands overflowing with the West’s unwanted computers and televisions makes a mockery of international bans to prevent the dumping of e-waste. Western governments, including the UK, have shown little desire to deal with the root cause of this problem.”

The Rise of the Ghannian Metro - Sexual
Wow - CHANGE the word of Last year this Year and the Year to come - Well in Ghana the men have really changed. A couple of years ago a drive through the principle streets of Accra would no doubt have left you thinking you were in a rap video of the must thugish rugish rapper but no this is AFRICA specifically the capital of Ghana. So whats my point? Well for a long time the fashion sense of the Ghanaian male was grossly informed but the black american rapper and the clothes, jewellrey and shoes that made apperances in their videos.
OhHHHH how times have changed I got the shock of my life when i moved to Ghana an noted with curiosity that there has been an ''all change'' as professed on the london tube. Baggy pants (or jeans if you may) are out and tight scrotum hugging skinny jeans are in
Bling,Gold and Diamonds are out and rosary's,wooden and plastic African beads are in
The basket ball jersey and fitted hat have been replaced with the fedora and button up, and mind you not any button up will do - criteria 1 it must be tight 2 if possible it must have a profound colour and the ultimate - if possible it must be a UK designer,,,,,,,,,,, hmmmmmm did you just say UK yep I did UK as in LONDON TOWN yep
Yeah i know you must be saying is this the same Ghana you know, the same Ghana in which a couple of years ago anyone with the streamlined UK look was categorized as GAY CHICHI ANTIMAN etc etc - YEP as i said this is the year for Change.
No more nike airforce 1's, now its strictly plimsoles or converses and it u really have the largent why dont u throw in some prada or gucci.
From the surface it may seem like the Ghanaian metrosexual has arrived and this movement my be spearheaded by chaps such us Kweku T or Chris Attoh but in reality I think the country is just going though another phase of mimicking and aping what they see in videos the only difference is that Lil Wayne has exchanged his xxxxxxxllll White T - Shirt for a nicely fitted Stussy t and his supper baggy rocawear jeans for skinny fit true religion jeans and so my brothers with the HERD mentality follow blindly.
I applaud people like Kweku t for introducing African jewelery for men into the scene however I am of the impression that are youth are so blinded by the lights that they have stifled their inner creativity and ability to st trends that are indigenous to their environment rather than to simply Follow the ''leader'' .

A Nation without Heroes - Ghana Independence Day
On our 52 nd Independence Anniversary I am sad to say that the fervor usually associated with such days has to a large extent escaped me or if I may be blunt I really could not give a toss this year. Why you may ask - well mainly because I believe I live in a country that honors mediocrity, a politics of patronage instead of merit and a nation that believes in the easy way out. Please don't get me wrong I am not one of those Ghana bashers and I am a patriotic son of this nation however my observations how let me come to the conclusion that we as a nation are quite good at being very dependent and to are large extent we render or political independence worthless with our need for dependence on others.
We seem to need someone to tell us that pure water will literally engulf our nation in 12 years and than we would need a loan from a European country t clean up our mess, w depend on even tooth pics from china, we depend on relatives for everything even jobs that we are absolutely qualified for and woe be tide you in case there is a government change then you have t depend on your connections in the opposing parties to ensure that you do not proceed on leave or (in my case) to get you reinstated. So why do we need to always need to depend instead of being independent.
My simple answer is that were are a nation of followers and not leaders and any nation filled with followers is a nation without Heroes. it is sad that a majority of the people in this nation including myself do not really know who the real heroes and sheroes in this country are and if we do not know who they are then how can he create new ones and move our country froward (no pun intended). Put who do I blame when our television sets of full of juju orientated Ghana and Nigerian films, Telenovelas that perpetuate an alien culture and reinforces certain supremacist stereotypes.
No i aint got nothing against foreign material on ur media but why should we be always dependent on someones work when we have not created our own. if we cannot even have cartoons with black people made and shown on or tv's everyday for our kids then we have no right showing them brain numbing content that have no use in making them independent and proud thinkers who one day will be the HEROES in a Nation without HEROES.

Bronya (Chritsmas) - A very political Pantomine
The festive season has always reminded me of food I mean real food - Plenty chicken beef meat meat and more meat.Childhood memories of this time of year can not be recalled without mentioning the famous Piccadilly biscuits , Belgian canned biscuits or the favorite/terror of children Amasi (masqueraders) who troop into town in groups to terrorize petrified kids.Then There is Family and the hundreds of cousins some of which you have never met, As you grow the import(enjoyment) of the festive season may lift - after all the pot bellied uncles no longer doth you with money - or you no longer get presents if you ever got some that is? Plus no one really cares about the decorations anyway if they are finally put up two day before the C- Day it means they will not come of until somewhere in March after Mummy has screamed a thousand times.Do you remember your Bronya atadee (Christmas Dress/Clothes) - The Holy grail of attire that was to be unveiled on that special day - if only everyday was Christmas our churches would continuously look like New York Fashion week after all everyone and their children and children's children wants u to see how fresh they look. At this time of the year we also have to remember those e who don't have and I hope we all do so this year.
Chritmas Interupted - This years Bronya will be a very political affair the Christmas dress has been replace by the political part t- shirt, the fanta has been replaced by political rally pure water (sachet water), jingle bells and co have been usurped by Nana oye winner (Npp political song) and Yeresesamu(we are changing things - the Ndc Song, Sermons of good tidings and peace have becomes sermons of peace and hope.The children's class of 2008 are quite and unfortunate bunch their Christmas will not be the usual affair after all Ghana has an Election run-off on the 28th December.
I wonder who Papa Bronya (Santa) will be voting for - I hope he votes wisely as for me the can only be one choice after all it will be a new year soon - Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year in Advance

church in Houston, Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he had an
occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he

really scary example of how much people watch us as Christians, and

Hi here are some more pictures from the just completed Can 2008
The reason for the heading 'Young Micheal Essien' stems from meeting a young man at the Accra mall autograph signing by Stephen appiah who was on a quest to reunite with his long lost friend 'Ghana's one and only Micheal Essien'. He had tried the hotel,and training grounds of the black stars with no avail and was trying his luck at the signing. I hitched a ride home with him and he showed me a picture of him and essien when they were teens in high school.

Hi sorry i have not been updating the site since i moved to Ghana, its been because i have not had internet access at home and I have been bogged down with house work such as supervising my little brothers and trying to rehabilitate my car. IN THE MOTHERLAND
The Saga of the Returnee
Whats good is been long and its all because when in Ghana do as the Ghana -man - so i have been feasting over the festive season, enjoyed the comforts of life without bills, taken a tro - tro (video will be uploaded soon) (public bus) drove a Benz and been totally frustrated by things that i expect to be normal. Ghana is a paradox which i sum up with this phrase 'everything has changed but nothing has changed' - Regarding things changing I have been able to easily access the Internet from my phone without issues but found it hard (more expensive) to hook up Internet at home. There are loads of new roads and developments however the old roads that were previously good have been neglected. What is weired is that for example if i left a sack of sand by the road side 5 years ago when i left Ghana the same bag will be at the exact spot a new road will have been constructed around the bag but no one will see this bag as an alien object.So yes the country (parts that i have seen so far) is developing how ever this form of development is not linear or necessarily progressive or uniform but to a large extent haphazard but at least it has begun.
P.s the SUN IS NICE but can be OPPRESSIVE

Does your environment mould u?
I have been thinking for a while about conditions (both social and economic) under which young black men grow and how these factors affect their abilities to utilize opportunities given to them and how their sense o identity is molded.
When ever i travel i try my best to get an understanding of the conditions, attitudes and economic standing of black people in different countries. I have been fortunate enough to travel to Holland, France,Turkey,America,Spain,Grew up in Ghana,Lived in the UK. In all these countries i have tried to figure out the frame of mind of the Black communities and their economic or social standing.
This is a break down of the varying impressions i had in the different countries.These are generalizations and should be treated us such.I shall naturally begin with Ghana.
Ghana - Black men have the blessing of growing up without an inferiority complex because its a black nation, however mass media portrayal of the west us heaven and a consumer 'bling' culture promoted by hip hop has molded the perceptions of the youth to move away from tradition and embrace anything western.An increase in nationalism due to 50 years of
Independence and qualification of the 2006 world cup has led to a better acceptance of being African and from Ghana.Future Prospects:If more young men stay and develop the country instead of always dreaming of the West us heaven and copying arbitrary cultures that support opposing economic markets (eg multi - million clothing companies vrs local clothing companies),then the brain - drain that is to a large extent voluntary as a result of conditioning to believe that one cannot thrive in Africa with certain specialized degrees or expertise will be reversed. If the nation can fight against the notion of negativity portrayed by western media about Africa and create and promote their own reality through their own media and the internet then the tide can be reversed.
How? - For nations like Ghana changing the frame of minds of people can start with something as simple a creating cartoons by black people for black people and catered to condition black children to believe in themselves. We need to create, reinterpret and re brand our legends and heroes in all sectors of our society. When a nation relies on using something so basic as cartoons from another country to entertain and educate their children then from the onset they condition them to look for more content from that source. We have to be our own source. Do you think GI JOE was created for entertainment (lol) - Go figure - they all have dual purposes.

whats up folks - writing this from a ''mansion' in alpine in New Jersey with all the inspiration and brains around me I have come to the realisation that i have been slippin with my blog, my jobs prospects and my dreams. When one wakes up to this reality, then one needs to ask God for guidance - something which i have not been doing lately.I need to get my priorities straight. ''Bitch'' moves...haters....saints..
u ever seen that scene off boyz in the hood..where cuba gooding junior comes home late to see his chic nia long...and he is so frustrated he is crying and swinging the air? swingin and muttering and crying and sobbing..if u have no emotions or jus walked in he looks retarded...
but i am guilty of swingin at the air toolately...ive been very pensive..i always think but have been very very very pensive..
i read the news and watch tv...and study people..and spend time alone and battle my demons...and wonder...what's going on?
these have been highlights on the news both local and int'l the last week
man in ghana shot outside nite club
ghanaian youth shot and killed in the US
two police officers gang rape 14 year old child
man rapes 3 year old girl
it goes on and on and on and on..i don't want to depress u ..im jus giving u the news here...ive been thinkin..and battlin somethin the lsat 3 weeks...its called the HATER..who is the hater? the hater is someone who hates u..who tries to pull u down..or shake u..or deter u...the person picks at ur weaknesses...and sometimes even at ur strengths and then tries to ruin ur reputation or ur mojo or ur relationship wit a significant other...
up until 3 weeks ago i didnt know i had haters..well i kno i had ppl who disliked me..but A HATER?
human behaviour never ceases to amaze me. Have you ever had someone dislike you for no paticular reason? I'm sure you have...well at least i have. The security officers at Lincoln community school, the former GIS head of pe department, Ashesi lectureres...the don't even know me like that....
However, i must have done something wrong to piss them off..right? Either way, the correct thing to do would be to approach me in a polite manner to address my fault. This is contstructive and even if nothing postivie results out of it, i would respect them for having the testicular fortitude( thank you Mankind of WWF fame) for approaching me.
Instead we have haters, fake people, enemies of progress who watch you at a distance, lurking in the darkness where they blend in so well...watching and waiting for you to fail. Sometimes they even go out of their way to make sure you fail. Like the devil manipulating Eve to ge to Adam, knowing Adam couldn't resist Eve..a person conjured from his own ribs...
These guys..instigatiors are punks but there are people even lower than them.I was recently introduced to this new elite group of scum. This new category characterizes of people or persons who say are your friends..maybe even on your facebook friend's list ..yet go as far as to from aliases( such as Watch Out or...Beware of Fred) and badmouth you anonymously. I personally have almost 500 'friends' on facebook so i don't know which one of my 'friends' has been doin this for the last 3 weeks..

I am human, and i make mistakes...several..day in and day out...the same ones...over and over again..but guess what? so do u..hater or lover...If you are not goiong to be helpful...leave the judging to God...

The August bank holiday is given over to a crowd partying like there's no tomorrow as people enjoy the spectacle of the floats and soak up the music of steel bands, reggae and the many sound systems along the three-mile route. Sunday is Children's Day, with an emphasis on families and younger festival goers.

Hopefully I willbe grilling some meat outside my church just like last year.

My response
Dude how come you dont attach your name to your posts because it will be nice to know who I am addressing this to. Yes i did watch the clip and no I do not remember talking to you about it.The heading was just a figure of speech and should not be taking literally. You ask some good questions because the incedence of mental illness within the black community in the UK is disproportinately high and may be (not sure)less in Africa?This is correlated with the high number of Black people who are put in mentaly institutions.It is a serious topic which should be looked at and as you said should not be swept under the carpet.
Regarding the Bondocks clip - this poses some good questions about the acceptability of Jesus to Black people because of his colour.My answer to that is that its not about his colour but his blood that washed away my sins. Under the new covenant with God there is no bonded man, Jew or Greek or African for that matter. The clip however to an extent reinforces the steroytypes about black people ie. stupid, obsessed with the N word, gun crazy etc etc.However I guess it trys to address serious and touchy issues from the perspective of a Hiphop orientated culture without seeming to be on a crusade or without being too serious.

Ghana Picnic 2007 Pictures
Folks i did go to the Ghana picnic but unfortuantely i could not spread the word or recruit anyone to help me with the Blog.

1) a t-shirt i designed but could not wear cause the spray paint I used was toxic (dumb huh)
